Professor Jessie Gordon MacCarthy Memorial Scholarship

Application Deadline: Monday July 31, 2017.

A scholarship valued at approximately $600* has been endowed by family, friends and colleagues of the late Jessie Gordon MacCarthy, who for ten years contributed through teaching, administration and research to the development of the Health Sciences at UBC. The award is made to the student who having completed the penultimate year of any pre-licensure Health Science course best combines academic excellence, demonstrated interest and leadership in the field of community health. Activities in the years immediately preceding admission to UBC may be considered as well as activities carried out while an undergraduate. The recipient is chosen by a committee, appointed by the Office of UBC Health. Financial need may be considered but shall be subordinate to aptitude and interest.

Minimum eligibility criteria:

a)    Applicant must be registered in a health or human services degree program at UBC and be in good academic standing;

b)    must be completing the penultimate year (ie. next to last year) of program at time of scholarship application, and be entering the final year of program in the Winter 2017 Term; and

c)    must meet minimum requirements for holding and retaining scholarships as stated in the UBC Senate Regulations Governing University Awards.

Examples of eligible students in applicable programs:

  • Medicine, Pharmacy, and Social Work students in Year 3 of their undergraduate degree.
  • Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy, and Audiology & Speech Sciences students in Year 1 of their Master’s degree.
  • Nursing students in Year 3 of their undergraduate degree, or in Year 1 of their Master of Science in Nursing or Master of Nursing degree.

Step 2:

Request an original transcript from the Registrar’s Office to be mailed directly to:

Step 3:

Request two letters of recommendations from referees with academic, health professional, or community educator roles, who can clearly describe your demonstrated interest and leadership in the field of community health, including your involvement in specific activities and the value that you brought to these activities. Letters of recommendation (max. 2 pages each) must be sent directly by your referees to Susana Leon, Administrator, either via email to or by mail to the address listed above.

Note: Applicants must ensure that transcripts and letters of recommendation are received in the Office of UBC Health by the application deadline in order for application package to be complete. Late or incomplete application packages will not be considered.


Scholarship winner will be contacted in September/October 2017.

Applicants who also wish to be considered for the John H. V. Gilbert Interprofessional Scholarship will need to submit a separate application online.
